Training for Alabama Trustees: Home

Alabama's public library boards play an important part in providing library services to their community. Not only do they oversee the operations of public libraries, they are charged with representing the interests of their communities on the board and the interests of the library to local and state elected officials.

For many, the responsibilities entrusted to library board members can be daunting. There is much to learn and keep track of, and there are elements of being a board member that are not codified in law but are the result of many decades worth of best practices. To help new and veteran board members navigate the complexities of being a board member, APLS has done the following:

  • Implemented a new training requirement (see Short Takes for Trustees page).
  • Produced an updated version of the trustee manual (see Trustee Handbook page).
  • Created this guide as a repository of useful information for board members.

While this guide attempts to be a one-stop shop for all board members' information needs, there are bound to be omissions and later additions. Please be sure to check back regularly for updates - especially as we move into new fiscal years and legislative sessions, as this will be one of the primary platforms APLS uses to communicate with board members. Feel free to contact your library's consultant or the reference department with any questions or concerns!
