Resources from APLS

These resources are available for all Alabamians, from home and for free:

  • Career Alabama. Career Alabama is primarily a tutoring service that offers job seekers one-on-one virtual guidance on finding a job, applying for a job online, writing a cover letter or resume, and preparing for an interview.

Please note that Career Alabama uses the same platform as Homework Alabama. APLS has produced a tutorial guide for Homework Alabama, which will help users navigate and use the resources available on Career Alabama.

Other Alabama Resources

  • Alabama Works! Provided by the State of Alabama. Includes a job search engine for Alabama jobs, career tips, and a career explorer, which matches job seekers to jobs based on their skills, interests, values, and other factors.
  • Local Public Library. The local public library is a great resource for job seekers. Many have books about careers, general office and workplace skills, and how to find and apply for jobs. All libraries in Alabama have public access computers where job seekers can find and apply for jobs online. DUE TO CONCERNS ABOUT THE OUTBREAK OF COVID-19, ALL LIBRARIES IN ALABAMA ARE EITHER CLOSED OR REDUCING THEIR SERVICES. PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL AHEAD OF YOUR VISIT TO DETERMINE WHAT SERVICES ARE CURRENTLY OFFERED TO PATRONS AT YOUR LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARY.
  • State of Alabama Personnel Department. Interested in working for the State of Alabama? If you already work for the state, do you want a promotion or career change? The State Personnel Department maintains current and continuous job announcements, an online application, and career guides to help prospective state employees find a job in state government. APLS maintains a collection of civil service testbooks that can be loaned out to you through your local library (ask for an interlibrary loan) or directly to current or retired state or federal employees.

Resources for Veterans

  • Feds Hire Vets.  Serves veterans, transitioning service members, and family. Contacts for federal agencies, openings, career information.
  • Military.com. Jobs for veterans from monster.com. includes job hunting resources like job fair information, resume best practices, and interview skills.
  • Veterans Employment Toolkit.  This toolkit is designed to provide vets with answers and resources in finding and obtaining employment, as well as making career decisions and excelling in the workplace. Includes links to the Veterans Employment Center, a jobs thesaurus to help vets translate and match military experience to civilian workplaces,and VetNet, a technology-based platform positioned to assist Veterans, transitioning service members, and their spouses, find and prepare for meaningful post-service careers.
  • Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS).  VETS serves America's veterans and separating service members by preparing them for meaningful careers, providing employment resources and expertise, and protecting their employment rights.

  • Career Builder. Searches local and regional jobs. Has additional resources like a salary tools, a resume builder, and job alerts.
  • Career One Stop.  Resume tutorial for job seekers including resources for resume design and essential features.
  • indeed.com. Searches thousands of company career sites and job boards. Browse by job title, company, category, and location. U.S. and worldwide.
  • Simply Hired. Searches local and regional jobs, including internships. Has additional tools like a salary calculator, resume builder, and job trends.
  • USA Jobs. Clearing house for federal government jobs. Includes a job search, searchable resumes, and virtual seminars to assist job seekers write resumes, search for employment, and much more.
